A company that handles freight forwarding is sometimes called a 'logistics company '.
Freight or cargo can be transported by sea, air, road or by train. (freight = cargo)
The logistics company will handle: transport of cargo from door to door, door to port, port to port, the paperwork (documents), and sometimes, paying the tax (customs duty) on behalf of the customer,
and insurance for the cargo.
Insurance is up to the customer. ( The customer can choose -- CIF or CFR )
Sometimes the customer will ask for insurance, so the charge will include cost, insurance, freight (CIF)
Sometimes the customer will ask for the CFR price which means "Cost and Freight price" with no insurance.
CFR means the shipper/seller is responsible to move the goods from his door to the port of destination.
The buyer / importer can use the shipper /seller to arrange freight forwarding and will transfer the
payment by international bank transfer.
CIF means Cost, Insurance and Freight.
The price must include the shipping and insurance.
The term Free on Board (FOB) is used when the seller/shipper loads the goods onto the ship with no insurance.
FOB means the risk for the goods passes to the buyer when the goods are loaded on the ship.
FOB price means the buyer / importer must pay the cost of the ocean freight.
CFR, FOB, CIF and other terms are called "Incoterms"
for more information on Incoterms please use this link:

Freight forwarders or logistics companies deal with people
from all over the world.
Communication in English is essential
e-mail and chat is the most popular way to communicate
Anyone can track a container online by the number, which is four letters and seven numbers,
for example: YYYY 1234567.
There is website called track - trace for container tracking.
You can also track ships all around the world online, so you will know when the ship arrives in port.
(arrive in port = docks) มาถึงที่ท่าเรือ

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Customers use a logistics company to transport their cargo from one place to another.
The price and the information and terms of service are important.
E-mail and chat communication can be informal, abbreviations are often used
and sometimes the grammar and punctuation is not perfect because time is money.
"Cash up front" or "Cash in advance" means the customer pays the full price first.
You must be polite to the customer, always use Mister or Madam and always say thank you.
The process students will learn is as follows:
1. The customer asks for a quote
The logistics company needs to know all the information about the cargo:
What is the cargo?
What is the value of the cargo?
What is the cubic size and weight?
Where is it going?
Does the customer want insurance?
Where can the logistics company pickup and load the cargo ( for trucking )?
For sea cargo - Which ports will be used?
For air cargo - Which airports will be used?
Who will pay the customs duty? ( does the customer want the logistics company to include the duty in the price?)
2. When you have all the information then you can give the customer a quotation in writing.
So, send an e-mail and list the method of payment.
( cash up front or 30% deposit and letter of credit to cover the balance)
3. The customer says "Yes" (quote accepted / quote approved)
The customer must send all the other information.
(this will go on the waybill and the bill of lading)
4. How is the customer going to pay? The customer will need your bank details.
E-mail the customer your bank details.
5. The customer pays 30 %. And e-mails the letter of credit .
Or, customer pays in full, cash up front.
6. Confirm place and date to - pick up / take delivery of - cargo.
Who is the contact person? What is the mobile number?
7. Pick up the cargo, load it on the ship.
After the cargo is on the ship tell the customer the name of the ship and the shipping line.
For example: Star of China (name of ship)
Greenway Line (name of shipping company)
or Maersk Newport (Maersk is the name of the shipping company, Newport is the name of the ship)
*** A ship is always called "she"
For example "She arrives in port tomorrow."
Tell the customer the container number and when the cargo should arrive at the port of discharge.
**** Sometimes the logistics company must pick up the cargo or container from the port and deliver it somewhere in Thailand, or in Laos, or in Cambodia by truck.
The freight forwarder or logistics company must fill in the Bill of Lading.(This is a very important document)
For the Bill of Lading:
What is the cargo? ( how many boxes / packets/ bags/ what is the weight)
Who is the cargo going to? (consignee)
Who should also be contacted when the cargo arrives? (notify party)
Where is the place of origin and final destination?
Which ports are used? (port of loading / port of discharge)
Waybill:
A waybill is a document issued by a carrier (the freight forwarding company) giving details and instructions about the shipment of a cargo consignment.
Usually, it will show the names of the consignor and consignee, the point of origin of the consignment, its destination, and route ( land or sea or land and sea).
Most freight forwarders and trucking companies use an in-house waybill called a house bill. This will have "conditions of contract of carriage" terms on the back of the form. These terms cover limits to liability and other terms and conditions.
****NOTE: The most important difference between a waybill and a bill of lading is the fact that a bill of lading is a document of title.
It is a very important document when letters of credit are used.
A waybill is not a document of title (it does not show ownership).

Some customers need to use airfreight.
Airfreight is faster but there are strict security controls.
The carrier must be sure that air cargo does not contain unauthorized weapons, explosives or other prohibited articles.
The cargo must be security screened by an airline or regulated agent.
When shipping lightweight, bulky packages, use the following formula to help you calculate their volumetric weight:
L x W x H (cu.cm.) / 6,000 = volumetric weight (kgs)
This way you can calculate the Volumetric Charge.
(L = LENGTH, W = WIDTH, H = HEIGHT in CENTIMETERS)
